A GOREAN DOCTOR'S OFFICE
"On the first day the Physician, a quiet man in the green garments of his caste, examined me, thoroughly. The instruments he used, the tests he performed, the samples he required were not unlike those of Earth. Of special interest to me was the fact that this room, primitive though it might be, was lit by what, in Gorean, is called an energy bulb, an invention of the Builders. I could see neither cords nor battery cases. Yet the room was filled with a soft, gentle white light, which the physician could regulate by rotating the base of the bulb. Further, certain pieces of his instrumentation were clearly far from primitive. For example, there was a small machine with gauges and dials. In this he would place slides, containing drops of blood and urine, flecks of tissue, a strand of hair. With a stylus he would note readings on the machine, and, on the small screen at the top of the machine, I saw, vastly enlarged, what reminded me of an image witnessed under a microscope."

Gorean Medical Knowledge
- Bazi Plague - A deadly, rapidly- spreading disease with no known cure; its symptoms include pustules which appear all over the body, and a yellowing of the whites of the eyes.
- Brak Bush - A shrub whose leaves have a purgative effect when chewed.
- Breeding Wine - A sweet beverage which counteracts the effects of slave wine, making a slavegirl fertile; also called second wine.
- Capture Scent - A sweetish smelling scent (i.e.chloroform).
- Dar-Kosis - Holy disease: an incurable, wasting disease akin to the Earth disease of leprosy.
- Gieron - A drug, an allergen, which causes a yellowing of the whites of the eyes; in combination with sajel, it reproduces the symptoms of the Bazi plague.
- Kanda - A shrub of the Gorean desert; a lethal poison can be extracted from its roots, while chewing the leaves has an addictive narcotic effect.
- Sajel - A drug which causes harmless pustules to erupt on the body; in combination with gieron, it reproduces the symptoms of the Bazi plague.
- Slave Wine - A black, bitter beverage that acts as a contraceptive; its effect is instantaneous and lasts for well over a month; can be counter-acted with a another, sweet-tasting beverage.
- Stabilization Serums - A series of medical injections which, among other things, retards the aging process; an invention of the Priest-Kings, approved by them for use by humans; administered in 4 injections.
- Tassa Powder - A reddish powder, usually mixed with red wine, which renders the consumer unconscious.
